Inujima Diaries: A Farewell & New Beginnings🪄︎︎∗*゚
Last Day Celebration🥂
This time was the last day of Inujima activities. To celebrate our hard work we put in this year and to express our gratitude to the island ladies, we prepared a special meal together.
We decided to serve udon to the island ladies. And we really went all in, starting from the noodles and soup!
Step 1; Making dough
Pour flour into a large all-purpose bowl and add water little by little. Mix and knead until the water is fully incorporated.
Step 2: Stomp on the dough 👣⸒⸒
Wrap the dough in plastic and press it with the whole foot until it spreads a little flat.
Shape it into a ball, wrap it in plastic, and let it rest.
Step 3: Rolling out
Dust the work surface with flour and roll the dough into a sheet about 3mm thick.
Step 4: Cutting🔪
Dust the sheet with flour, fold it, and cut every 3mm to make square-section udon.
Step 5: Boiling🫠
Drop the udon into boiling water and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Making udon by hand is really hard work, but incredibly rewarding!
Sides & Sweets🍰🍴✨
We also made Chikuwa Seaweed Tempura (ちくわの磯辺揚げ), sweet potato fries (from the garden!), and persimmon cake.
A Meal for the Island Ladies🧑🏻🍳🥣
We welcomed five island ladies, and they enjoyed our hearty lunch. It was a wonderful chance to connect, share food, and show our social design activities in a warm, tangible way.
🩷Reflection & Thanks🩷
Finally, our Inujima social design project is over! This summer was hot and sometimes tiring, but being able to do agriculture and community work on the beautiful, breezy island of Inujima was truly special. Has anything about Inujia changed? Maybe not in big ways. The population is still decreasing, though many visitors keep coming. We may not have achieved huge visible success, but we learned about Inujima, discovered its strengths, built great connections, and cooperated with many kind people.
Think deploy, and just do it.
Above all, thank you so much for this supportive environment. We are truly grateful. We hope next year’s students will enjoy it just as much!
